Another Steam Game Gets Removed Over Malware
"Beyond the Dark was set up to steal data from players, with the malware hidden in a file called UnityPlayer.dll. Steam subsequently removed Beyond the Dark and the game is no longer on the platform. The removal followed exposure of the setup that targeted unsuspecting buyers through the Steam distribution channel."
"Beyond the Dark was originally uploaded to Steam in December 2024 under the name Rodent Race, which appears to have been an entirely different game. Earlier this month, Rodent Race was apparently replaced by Beyond the Dark, which PCGamesN theorizes was done in order to bypass any security checks from Valve. The name change and replacement suggest an attempt to evade detection."
"Earlier this year, the FBI announced a criminal probe into games on Steam that were infected by malware. The bureau invited members of the public to come forward with any information they had about the crimes, and the announcement appeared to suggest that the infected games came from the same suspect or suspects. The investigation is ongoing, and the FBI is collecting information from affected players."
"Any player who downloaded infected games from Steam between May 2024 and January 2026 has been asked to fill out a form on the FBI's site. Valve previously announced security measures on Steam that were designed to prevent malware from being spread, but notable instances still occurred in the last year. A streamer alleged that one infected title stole money from funds he was using for cancer treatment."
Beyond the Dark, a free-to-play survival-horror game, was removed from Steam after malware was identified as being hidden in a file named UnityPlayer.dll. The game was no longer available on the platform following Valve’s action. The game’s history showed it was originally uploaded to Steam in December 2024 under the name Rodent Race, which appeared to be a different title. Rodent Race was later replaced by Beyond the Dark, potentially to avoid Valve security checks. The FBI has an ongoing criminal probe into malware-infected Steam games and asked the public for information. Players who downloaded infected games between May 2024 and January 2026 were instructed to submit a form on the FBI website.
