"Uber has always been great in building marketplaces, in matching supply and demand, and in pricing," Ron told Business Insider. "That's what created Uber, that what's created Uber Eats, and that's what I created with Uber Freight."
"I think it's really about: Can the system scale? Can the system be mass-deployed?" he said. "It's not about getting the first driver out of the car or truck. It's not about the first lane"
Waabi is a Canadian autonomous-trucking startup founded by Raquel Urtasun. Uber will invest $250 million in Waabi contingent on undisclosed milestones to support plans to deploy 25,000 robotaxis over time. Waabi COO Lior Ron previously led Uber Freight and emphasizes Uber's strengths in marketplace-building, matching supply and demand, and pricing. Waabi has not yet deployed a fully driverless truck without safety drivers on commercial routes, and no timeline or automaker partnership to deliver that many vehicles has been announced. Ron framed success as dependent on scalability and mass deployment rather than first-mover advantage.
