"I love it there because that's where I became a person. It's where I grew up, and where I spent a lot of Covid. The memories are, like, taking my practice ACT at home, eating at the same fucking Indian restaurant over and over again, taking the 1 to school, walking my dog. Just living there."
"At the time, I didn't appreciate it, because all my school friends were from the Upper West Side. I was so insecure, like, painfully insecure, that I didn't live there because it was too expensive. I would always get so embarrassed when people would be like, 'Is growing up in New York like Gossip Girl?' For me, it wasn't."
Jake Shane grew up in Washington Heights, New York, initially feeling insecure about his neighborhood compared to the wealthier Upper West Side where his school friends lived. He later moved to Los Angeles, where he found success creating comedy content on Instagram through his account @passthatpuss, which began as octopus dish reviews before expanding into podcasting and socializing. After returning to New York for a Broadway role in All Out at the Nederlander Theater, Shane rediscovered his love for the city and his home neighborhood. He now appreciates the vibrant community his mother always praised, recognizing that Washington Heights shaped who he became. Shane shares his favorite Manhattan establishments, including restaurants, nightclubs, and other local haunts that reflect his connection to the city.
