Upper West Side Metro Theater Officially Has a New Owner and a New Plan
Briefly

The Metro Theater on the Upper West Side has been purchased for $6.9 million by the nonprofit Upper West Side Cinema Center, with funding from various sources, including a $3.5 million grant from Governor Hochul. The theater, which has been closed for 20 years, is set to be revitalized as a premier venue for cinema and art. However, additional fundraising of $15 to $25 million is needed for renovations and cleaning, indicating that its opening is still some time away.
"For far too long, the beloved Metro Theater has sat empty - waiting for leaders with the courage and conviction to bring it back to life," Gov. Hochul stated.
The Upper West Side Cinema Center will now look to raise an additional $15 to $25 million to construct a new interior and clean the building.
