The East River Park on Manhattan's Lower East Side has reopened after a four-year renovation aimed at enhancing flood protection, at a cost of $1.5 billion. The renovation includes new recreational areas, basketball courts, and the planting of about 600 trees. This effort is part of the larger East Side Coastal Resiliency project, designed to protect against flooding, especially after Hurricane Sandy's impact in 2012. The park has been elevated to conceal a floodwall, and the entire project is set for completion in 2027, with more green space reopening soon.
This milestone marks another important step forward in the East Side Coastal Resiliency project.
These new spaces reflect our commitment to climate readiness, while giving families, kids and residents of all ages more ways to enjoy their neighborhood.
