"Every subway train has a schedule that defines what time it's supposed to be at each station. At most (though not all) locations in the system, we use that schedule to decide which train goes first. Using the schedule to aid in making these decisions helps us ensure that trains arrive on time to other merges and remain evenly spaced."
"The West in West 4 was added not only because many of the streets above the station are named by that convention, but also because there was a proposed South 4 St station on the never-built IND Second System in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This station would have been where the Broadway station on the IND Crosstown Line (the G train of today) is located."
The MTA operates an Ask the MTA column addressing transit questions from New York City riders. When multiple subway trains arrive at a station simultaneously, the MTA uses each train's schedule to determine departure order, prioritizing on-time arrivals at subsequent stations and maintaining even spacing between trains. The West 4 Street-Washington Square station's name includes "West" because it serves as a transfer hub between two subway lines and because streets above the station follow that naming convention. Additionally, the name distinguishes it from a proposed South 4 Street station that was never built in Brooklyn.
