1 train station at 125 Street to finally get elevators through MTA-Columbia University funding agreement | amNewYork
"The transit authority will install one elevator between the street and the station's mezzanine level and another two between the mezzanine and northbound and southbound platforms, MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said during a May 8 news conference outside the station. He said the upgrades will open up the West Harlem station to some of the most transit-dependent communities in the city."
"This is special for all of the people in wheelchairs, people with strollers, people with suitcases, a lot of whom have not been able to use this station because of its limitations from an accessibility standpoint, Lieber said. These are communities where people do not take Ubers to work. These are communities where people really do rely on transit. And making transit better is really special when you're serving that population."
"The 121-year-old station, situated on the Manhattan Valley Viaduct, runs over Broadway between West 122nd and West 135 Streets. It serves 6,500 daily riders. The MTA will also widen the station's already-existing escalators between the street and mezzanine level on the west side of Broadway and perform state-of-good-repair work, including platform upgrades, throughout the structure."
"It has always been held back by the fact that we have a subway station that feels like it's a mile high with no elevator access, Levine said. Not just people with wheelchairs or who have disabilities, but we have so many seniors"
Elevators will be added to the 125th St 1 train station to provide ADA accessibility. One elevator will connect the street level to the station mezzanine, and two elevators will connect the mezzanine to the northbound and southbound platforms. The upgrades are intended to improve access for wheelchair users, people with strollers, and travelers with suitcases who have been unable to use the station due to accessibility limitations. The 121-year-old station serves about 6,500 daily riders and is located on the Manhattan Valley Viaduct over Broadway between West 122nd and West 135 Streets. The MTA will also widen existing escalators on the west side of Broadway and complete state-of-good-repair work, including platform upgrades.
