"Climbing without a fixed route, adapting as conditions change. Sometimes when the tension becomes too much to bear, you've got to take a moment to pause. During that time, you reflect on everything that's happening and the reasons behind it. After around 20 years in the design industry, the work feels tougher than ever. It's increasingly harder to find a job, let alone hold onto one."
"The problem isn't that we lack the skills, intelligence, or tools - it's that the conditions keep changing. No one knows what's going to happen. I don't think many of us have a clue, which is the frightening part about this whole situation. And pretending otherwise only adds to the pressure. Amongst that rising tension, I'm feeling a little more unsettled about the future. As a solo designer and writer, I'm reflecting on my journey and where it's leading me."
Two decades in the design industry have made work feel harder; finding and keeping jobs has become increasingly difficult despite maintained skills, intelligence, and tools. The primary challenge stems from constantly changing conditions rather than individual capability. Uncertainty about the future creates mounting pressure, and pretending certainty only intensifies that tension. A solo designer and writer feels unsettled and pauses to reflect on career direction, process, and priorities. The focus turns to questions about why pressure has risen, what a tool-dominant design process should look like, and what can be lost, compromised, or traded off.
