You Weren't Telling the Truth': Senator Grills Trump Administration Nominee Over Payments She Received For Endorsing Products
"There's a prenatal vitamin called WeNatal. Your filings show you started receiving compensation in spring 2024, & yet in Sept 2024 you posted a video saying you had 'no financial relationship w/ the company, just a big fan.' You weren't telling the truth."
"If you endorse a product through social media, your endorsement message should make it obvious when you have a relationship with the brand. Are you familiar with that? There is a pending complaint regarding your failure to adhere to those guidelines, that basically makes the contention that you routinely violated this policy."
During a Senate confirmation hearing, Senator Chris Murphy questioned U.S. Surgeon General nominee Casey Means about her compliance with FTC policies requiring disclosure of financial relationships when endorsing products online. Murphy presented evidence that Means received compensation from WeNatal, a prenatal vitamin company, beginning in spring 2024, yet posted videos in September and October 2024 claiming she had no financial relationship with the company and was simply a fan. Murphy cited FTC guidelines stating that endorsements through social media must make obvious any relationship with brands. Means denied the allegations, but Murphy indicated a pending FTC complaint alleging she routinely violated disclosure policies across multiple product recommendations.
