A report described Attorney General Pam Bondi as unaware that a Trump-installed U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia had presented an indictment against New York Attorney General Letitia James. Lindsey Halligan announced charges including bank fraud and making a false statement on a mortgage application. The indictment followed public criticism from President Donald Trump, who called for prosecutions of James and other critics. James had overseen a civil fraud case against the Trump Organization that produced a large judgment later thrown out on appeal. ABC News reported senior Justice Department leadership were caught off guard. Republicans largely defended Justice Department actions.
