Will Trump Oppose a 'Watered-Down' SAVE America Act?

The alleged purpose of the legislation is to prevent an entirely imaginary epidemic of voting by noncitizens, a central element of the MAGA mythology."

"Trump is demanding provisions radically restricting voting by mail and entirely non-germane legislation attacking transgender folk that the House never considered or voted upon. So once the House bill is on the Senate floor, the first order of business will be Republican amendments to satisfy Trump's demands, creating a significant procedural and political challenge for Senate Republicans."

The U.S. Senate is debating the SAVE America Act, legislation requiring voters to prove citizenship through documents approximately 21 million Americans do not possess. Republicans support the bill to satisfy the MAGA base and believe voter-ID requirements poll favorably, while anticipating Democratic filibuster opposition. However, Republicans face internal conflict: Donald Trump demands the Senate version include provisions far stricter than the House-passed bill, including severe mail-in voting restrictions and unrelated transgender legislation that the House never considered.
