Cyril Ramaphosa, the President of South Africa, is on a visit to the United States to meet President Donald Trump, marking the first time an African leader is hosted by Trump since he took office. This visit is crucial, following a decline in US-South Africa relations since early 2025, fueled by ideological rifts and policy disagreements. Analysts caution the discussions may become confrontational, particularly surrounding Trumpâs controversial claims of genocide against white South Africans. Ramaphosa's government is focused on improving South Africa's global image during this visit.
"The president's visit to the US provides a platform to reset the strategic relationship between the two countries," the South African presidency said in a statement.
"The objective is to try to clean up South Africa's image and remove the perception that Trump is putting forward about South Africa as a country where a genocide against white Afrikaaners is taking place," Fredson Guilengue expressed.
