Why 'TACO Trump' Can't Really Chicken Out on Mass Deportation
"Two days after Border Patrol agents killed Alex Pretti, to the shock and horror of the many millions of people who saw viral video of his shooting, Donald Trump showed uncharacteristic signs of recognizing a mistake. With even some Republican officials raising alarms about the political consequences of ICE and Border Patrol excesses in Minneapolis, the president appeared to "pivot" from the aggressive defense of masked-agent tactics by the likes of Kristi Noem."
"But given Trump's tendency to mix signals and messages unpredictably, it's probably a mistake to read too much into what may be a tactical "pause" or at most a strategic retreat. The president obviously needs to do something to change the very bad vibes emanating from Minneapolis and also has to cope with an almost certain partial government shutdown in response to the shootings."
Two days after Border Patrol agents killed Alex Pretti, viral video sparked widespread shock and horror, prompting Donald Trump to show uncharacteristic signs of recognizing a mistake. With Republican officials warning about political fallout from ICE and Border Patrol actions, Trump appeared to pivot from aggressive defenses; Tom Homan was deployed to Minnesota and Border Patrol chief Greg Bovino left the state. Trump reportedly spoke with Minnesota governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey to deescalate federal-state tensions. Despite the apparent pause, Trump's mixed signals and the centrality of mass deportation to MAGA will limit any full reversal.
