Why e-bikes and e-scooters are making the streets a nightmare' for blind people
"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging."
"Electric bikes and scooters are causing fear and anxiety for blind and partially sighted people, according to a new report. The growing use of e-bikes and e-scooters is making streets a nightmare for blind and partially sighted people when they are either ridden or parked on pavements. Only one in 10 (9 per cent) blind people confident walking in their own neighbourhood, charity the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) said, thanks to the use of micromobility transport."
The Independent requests donations to fund reporters and keep reporting free from paywalls, stating that quality journalism should be available to everyone and paid for by those who can afford it. Electric bikes and scooters are causing fear and anxiety for blind and partially sighted people. Dockless rental schemes and parked micromobility vehicles are obstructing pavements, forcing 92 per cent of surveyed blind or partially sighted people to walk into roads. Only nine per cent feel confident walking in their own neighbourhood. Thirty-four per cent reported a collision with a street obstacle in the previous three months, and some guide dogs were withdrawn after becoming stressed.
