Demolition of part of the White House East Wing has begun to construct a new ballroom with a 1,000-person capacity and an estimated $250 million cost. The addition represents the largest expansion of the presidential residence in over a century. The East Wing, home to the First Lady’s offices, will be modernized during the project while the presidential office remains in the West Wing and the First Family resides in the Executive Mansion. The project is being presented as privately funded, with a donors’ dinner attended by representatives from major tech companies and claims of no taxpayer cost.
