Coast Guard Island is a 67-acre artificial island in the Oakland Estuary that serves as a major Coast Guard base. The Department of Homeland Security operates the base and is providing it as a place of operations for CBP. CBP is the largest DHS law enforcement agency, with more than 60,000 employees, responsible for border patrol, ports of entry, and enforcing immigration and customs laws. Mayor Barbara Lee said Oakland will not cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.
