We're Back, Italians!' Trump Kicks Off Cabinet Meeting by Commemorating Columbus Day
"We have your Columbus Day proclamation for Monday which we are signing a bit early, Scharf said. Christopher Columbus obviously discovered the New World in 1492. He was a great Italian explorer. He sailed his three ships, the Nina, the Pinta, the Santa Maria, across the Atlantic Ocean and landed in what is today the Caribbean. This is a particularly important holiday for Italian Americans who celebrate the legacy of Christopher Columbus, the innovation and explorer zeal that he represented."
"Pew Research Center has called the day one of the most inconsistently celebrated U.S. holidays, since it was declared a federal holiday in 1971. That's because only 30 states currently celebrate Columbus Day, with only 20 states and two territories making it a paid holiday for state workers.. Others call it Indigenous Peoples Day or American Indian Heritage Day. Watch the clip above via Fox News."
President Donald Trump signed a proclamation officially designating the second Monday in October as Columbus Day to honor Christopher Columbus. White House staff secretary Will Scharf presented the proclamation during a Cabinet meeting and described Columbus as a great Italian explorer who discovered the New World in 1492 and sailed the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria to the Caribbean. Trump reiterated the name Columbus Day as the Cabinet applauded and emphasized the holiday's importance to Italian Americans. The holiday has become inconsistently observed since its federal designation in 1971, with some states adopting Indigenous Peoples Day or other names and varying paid-holiday status.
