We have to have it': Trump renews push for Greenland as Denmark protests
"We need Greenland for national security, not for minerals, the US president said. If you take a look at Greenland, you look up and down the coast, you have Russian and Chinese ships all over the place We have to have it."
"You cannot annex another country. Not even with an argument about international security, they said. The US shall not take over Greenland."
"the US moves may sound big, but it does not change anything for us. We decide our own future, he said."
"It is a difficult situation that our allies for a lifetime are putting us in."
The US president declared Greenland essential to US national security and appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to pursue acquisition. Landry described the role as a volunteer position and said it would not affect his gubernatorial duties. The president emphasized strategic concerns about Russian and Chinese ships along Greenland’s coast. Denmark’s prime minister and Greenland’s prime minister issued a joint rebuke, asserting that Greenland belongs to Greenlanders and cannot be annexed. Greenland’s prime minister said US moves change nothing for Greenland and that Greenlanders will decide their own future. Denmark’s foreign minister also reacted earlier.
