"Walk out! ICE out!"
"I wanted to come out here today because I have seen on the news that there are a lot of people getting deported and getting separated from their families, and I don't think that's right,"
"We are humans, we are not aliens."
"We have to fight back, and it starts with us,"
Students at Fremont High School gathered before 1 p.m. and, when the gate opened, a couple hundred poured out, chanting "Walk out! ICE out!" They marched down International Boulevard carrying flags and anti-ICE signs welcoming immigrants and refugees and converged at Fruitvale Plaza. Students flowed in from around a dozen Oakland schools across the flats and hills. Oakland Unified School District notified parents that schools would remain open and noted state law allows one excused absence per year for middle and high school students participating in a political or civic event. Several students helped organize and some traveled long distances to join the protest.
