"You better let go of him, sir. You better let me out, Pearson told one officer, who appears to have been told to back off by fellow officers as things got more heated. Pearson accused the officer of having him all tied up. My brother ain't doing nothing to nobody."
"This is what tyranny does. This is what white supremacy does. This is it, trying to force us to capitulate. Pearson said this on Facebook after leaving the Capitol, announcing his brother was being arrested along with other protesters for refusing to clear the House gallery."
During a contentious redistricting vote at the Tennessee state Capitol, State Rep. Justin J. Pearson engaged in a heated confrontation with Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers. The incident occurred as officers attempted to clear protesters from the House gallery after parachutes were thrown and the fire alarm was pulled. Pearson intervened to shield his brother from arrest, demanding officers release him. The redistricting measure, which Pearson opposed, passed the House and was subsequently signed into law by the governor. Pearson's brother was taken into custody along with other protesters for refusing to vacate the gallery. Pearson later posted on Facebook characterizing the events as tyranny and white supremacy.
