Washington DC sues after Trump officials' hostile takeover' of city police
Briefly

Washington DC is seeking an emergency restraining order against Donald Trump's takeover of its police department, citing it as a hostile takeover of law enforcement. Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed a lawsuit to maintain local control over the Metropolitan Police Department, following an order from US Attorney General Pam Bondi for a federal official to impose a new police chief. Schwalb argues the Trump administration's actions exceed legal federal authority. Local leaders have challenged this move, asserting the importance of the District's personnel authority and rejecting the federal imposition of a police leader.
The Trump administration named the administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to be imposed as emergency police commissioner over Washington DC, a move that further escalated federal control of the city, but immediately was challenged by local leaders, who then sued.
By declaring a hostile takeover of MPD, the Administration is abusing its limited, temporary authority under the Home Rule Act, the lawsuit says.
