The border fence, alternatively called the border wall, does not form an unbroken barrier and protects only selected stretches of the nearly 2,000-mile US-Mexico boundary. Physical installations appear as a series of discontinuous obstructions rather than a continuous structure, with gaps and transitions between fenced and unfenced areas. The primary function of these obstructions is to discourage and impede illegal crossings into the United States. In places the barrier takes a serpentine form and terminates abruptly at certain points, for example on the outskirts of Fort Hancock, illustrating the patchwork and incomplete nature of the border barrier.
