""I don't think that's suitable at all,""
""I feel like there is a definitional disconnect between what we present to the court and what the VA has in mind,""
""They talk about the sheds. We never talked about that.""
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs plans to place up to 800 tiny homes on its West Los Angeles campus this year as a first step toward complying with a 2024 court order to build thousands of permanent and temporary housing units. The proposed units are 8-by-8-foot sheds that veterans and disability advocates say are cramped, flimsy, undignified and difficult to use with wheelchairs and walkers. More than 100 tiny homes already placed for veterans who camped nearby proved problematic and raised fire-safety and long-stay suitability concerns. Veterans' attorneys say the VA's plan differs from what the court-mandated relief intended, and a presidential executive order to establish a National Center for Warrior Independence on the campus was noted as a subtext.
