The University of Virginia is currently accepting nominations for an interim president to succeed former executive James Ryan, who resigned due to pressure from the Department of Justice. The nomination process will remain open until July 25, followed by listening sessions with community members. The board emphasizes shared governance in its approach to leadership selection. Jennifer Wagner Davis will act as the interim president until a new candidate is appointed. Ryan's resignation was linked to accusations from the Justice Department regarding the university's DEI programs and civil rights violations.
The Board of Visitors is committed to working closely with members of our community to hear their perspectives and ensure stability and continuity going forward. Shared governance is a core value of this institution and we will uphold it as we pursue the selection of an interim president, as well as our 10th university president after that.
The Justice Department had accused Ryan and the flagship institution of failing to eliminate all DEI programs on campus, violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color and national origin.
