US: Trump administration to keep DC police chief in charge DW 08/16/2025
Briefly

The Trump administration reversed its decision to take control of the Washington, DC police force, allowing Police Chief Pamela Smith to retain command after a federal court ruling. US District Judge Ana Reyes stated the law prevents the president from controlling the city police despite some legal authority over it. Tensions escalated earlier in the week as Trump deployed National Guard troops to address alleged crime issues, dubbing the day 'Liberation Day.' The DC Attorney General filed a lawsuit to block the federal takeover of local law enforcement as illegal.
The US President Donald Trump administration on Friday retracted its previous decision and agreed to let the Washington, DC, police chief remain in charge of the police force after a federal court's order.
US District Judge Ana Reyes observed that the Trump administration cannot legally take over the city police, but the law probably gives the president more power than the city might like.
Trump had deployed hundreds of National Guard Troops in Washington, as a crime crackdown. He called it 'Liberation Day' and claimed the city needed rescuing from 'crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor.'
The lawsuit, filed by DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb, had sought a court order blocking the takeover as illegal.
