The Senate rejected a bid to block President Trump's tariffs, with a 49-49 vote despite bipartisan worries about their economic impact. Three Republican senators, Rand Paul, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski, sided with all Democrats and Independents in a rare party opposition to the president. The resolution was characterized as purely symbolic, lacking support in the Republican-controlled House, and facing likely veto by Trump. Concerns over tariffs remain significant, especially following the announcement that the US economy has contracted 0.3% in the first quarter, possibly raising questions about the viability of Trump's trade policies.
The United States Senate cannot be an idle spectator in the tariff madness, Democratic Senator Ron Wyden, who represents Oregon, said ahead of the vote. The Congress has the power to set tariffs and regulate global trade.
It's still a debate worth having, because, you know, if a month from now, we have massive tariffs go on, and we have a massive sell off in the stock market... people would start asking, Is it good policy, or is it a bad policy?' Paul said.
