US: Oklahoma governor commutes execution at last minute DW 11/13/2025
""After a thorough review of the facts and prayerful consideration, I have chosen to accept the Pardon and Parole Board's recommendation to commute Tremane Wood's sentence to life without parole,""
""This action reflects the same punishment his brother received for their murder of an innocent young man and ensures a severe punishment that keeps a violent offender off the streets forever.""
""This decision," she said, "honors the wishes of Mr. Wipf's family and the surviving victim and we hope it allows them a measure of peace.""
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt commuted Tremane Wood's death sentence to life without parole after the Pardon and Parole Board voted 3-2 to recommend clemency. Wood was scheduled for execution for his role in an attempted armed robbery at an Oklahoma City hotel on January 1, 2002 that ended with the murder of Ronnie Wipf. Wood's elder brother Zjaiton confessed to stabbing Wipf and died by suicide in prison in 2019. The commutation mirrors the punishment given to Wood's brother. Legal counsel expressed gratitude and said the decision honors the wishes of Wipf's family and a surviving victim; prosecutors registered disappointment.
