The Department of Justice has sued New York City, challenging its sanctuary city laws after a Customs and Border Patrol officer was shot by an undocumented immigrant in Manhattan. Homeland Security Secretary and border czar Tom Homan expressed strong criticism of sanctuary cities, asserting that they protect criminals. Homan pledged to deploy immigration agents in New York City to apprehend undocumented immigrants with violent backgrounds. The lawsuit claims city laws obstruct federal enforcement of immigration law and have led to the release of numerous violent offenders into the community.
"Sanctuary cities are sanctuaries for criminals, hard stop," Homan said.
"The challenged provisions of New York City law reflect the City's intentional effort to obstruct the United States' enforcement of federal immigration law..."
"New York City has released thousands of criminals on the streets to commit violent crimes against law-abiding citizens due to sanctuary city policies," Attorney General Pam Bondi said.
"If New York City won't stand up for the safety of its citizens, we will."
