US, Colombia tensions surge as Presidents Trump, Petro trade threats
"He's a thug and he's a bad guy, and he's hurt his country very badly, Trump said. They're doing very poorly, Colombia. They make cocaine. They have cocaine factories and he better watch it or we'll take very serious action against him and his country, the US president said. What he has led his country into is a death trap, Trump added."
"From the slanders that have been cast against me in the territory of the United States by high-ranking officials, I will defend myself judicially with American lawyers in the American justice system, Petro wrote on X. I will always stand against genocides and murders by those in power in the Caribbean, he said, adding that when Colombian help is required to fight against drug trafficking, American society will have it."
Weeks of escalating tension between Washington and Bogota culminated in the United States suspending all military aid to Colombia amid allegations of Colombian involvement in the international narcotics trade. The U.S. president accused the Colombian leader of leading the country into a ‘‘death trap,’’ calling him a thug and alleging cocaine production and factories. The Colombian president announced plans to pursue legal defence in U.S. courts, vowed to oppose genocides and murders, offered Colombian cooperation against drug traffickers, and recalled Colombia's ambassador while accusing the U.S. president of violating trade agreements.
