The US government has stopped funding 22 mRNA vaccine projects aimed at combating respiratory illnesses, citing doubts about their effectiveness against diseases like COVID-19 and flu. This decision was revealed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who noted that the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) terminated these investments worth nearly $500 million. Kennedy mentioned a shift towards developing safer vaccine alternatives, emphasizing the importance of effective vaccines for Americans who desire them, while stating that current mRNA applications in other fields remain unaffected.
Kennedy stated, "We reviewed the science, listened to the experts, and acted." He emphasized that the mRNA vaccine projects were halted due to failure in effectively protecting against upper respiratory infections.
"To replace the troubled mRNA programs, we're prioritizing the development of safer, broader vaccine strategies, like whole-virus vaccines and novel platforms that don't collapse when viruses mutate," Kennedy explained.
