The meeting comes as economic forecasts suggest a possible US recession, with significant impacts on trade. Bessent sees the talks as a chance for de-escalation. While both nations face economic strain due to high tariffs, conditions allow for some exemptions, though China maintains its principles in negotiations.
"My sense is that this will be about de-escalation, not about the big trade deal...but we've got to de-escalate before we can move forward," Bessent told Fox News.
"As the first face-to-face meeting between senior US and Chinese officials since Trump's inauguration, it's an important opportunity to have initial talks on unwinding some tariffs, mapping out a path forward," Cutler remarked.
