Organizations such as Extinction Rebellion, Climate Defenders, Rise and Resist, and more sought to disrupt global leaders heading to the UN headquarters at the corner of East 42nd Street and 1st Avenue."
Protest groups including Extinction Rebellion, Climate Defenders and Rise and Resist blocked traffic around the United Nations to disrupt dignitaries entering for the 80th General Assembly. The demonstrations began near the New York Public Library at 42nd Street and 5th Avenue and reached as close as East 42nd Street and 2nd Avenue, where dozens were handcuffed for blocking the roadway. Streets near and leading to the UN were closed by the NYPD amid heightened security. Another group moved to East 46th Street and 3rd Avenue, unfurled a giant banner reading The world deserves better, chanted against drilling, and accused Trump-era policies of causing irreparable planetary harm. Drivers reacted with anger and multiple protesters were arrested.
