Tucker Carlson repeatedly claimed that Pete Buttigieg is not genuinely gay and proposed testing his authenticity by asking specific questions about gay sex. Michael Knowles suggested that certain identities provide advantages in liberal politics and used Buttigieg as an example. Carlson cited a producer's skepticism and pointed to Buttigieg's past dating of women as evidence. Carlson made similar assertions in July 2024 and also alleged that Minnesota governor Tim Walz is secretly gay despite his marriage. Buttigieg remains openly gay and was the first openly gay person confirmed by the U.S. Senate to a Cabinet position.
