"Your decision to withdraw at the last moment-explicitly in response to the Center's recent renaming, which honors President Trump's extraordinary efforts to save this national treasure-is classic intolerance and very costly to a non-profit Arts institution,"
"political stunt."
"When I saw the name change on the Kennedy Center website and then hours later on the building, I chose to cancel our concert,"
"I've been performing at the Kennedy Center since the beginning of my career and I was saddened to see this name change,"
Kennedy Center president Richard Grenell demanded payment from jazz musician Chuck Redd for canceling an annual free Christmas Eve concert after the center was renamed to include Donald Trump's name. Grenell's letter called Redd's last-minute withdrawal "classic intolerance" and said it was costly to a non-profit arts institution. Grenell said he would seek $1 million in damages and described Redd's actions as a "political stunt." Redd said he canceled after seeing the name change on the Kennedy Center website and building. Redd has hosted the holiday jazz concert for about 20 years and said he was saddened by the renaming. The board, selected by Trump, voted to add Trump's name, prompting a legal challenge from Rep. Joyce Beatty that cites a law barring the center from being made a memorial to someone else or having another person's name added. Several Kennedy family members expressed outrage.
