A 2011 cartoon imagined a Trump White House as a gaudy casino-hotel with gold pillars, chandeliers and scantily clad receptionists. Fourteen years later, Trump, twice elected and intent on expanding presidential power, is remaking the presidential residence, most visibly by demolishing the East Wing to construct a $250m ballroom. Images of broken masonry and rubble produced disaster-movie associations and drew condemnation from White House alumni and presidential historians.
