Donald Trump criticized US museums for emphasizing the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade and labeled them "woke." He singled out the Smithsonian, calling it "out of control" and alleging it focuses on "how horrible our country is." He objected to exhibits about slavery, saying they omit "success" and "brightness" and declared he would not allow such portrayals. He said he has instructed lawyers to review museums and pursue legal action to censor exhibits deemed "woke." The Smithsonian runs multiple free museums including the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which documents the transatlantic slave trade. More than 15 million people were victims of the transatlantic slave trade over four centuries.
Trump said the Smithsonian is "out of control" and only discusses "how horrible our country is."
"[It discusses] how bad slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been," he wrote. "Nothing about success, nothing about brightness, nothing about the future. We are not going to allow this to happen."
claiming he has instructed lawyers to "go through the Museums" and censor exhibits considered "woke."
"This country cannot be WOKE, because WOKE IS BROKE," he went on. "We have the 'HOTTEST' country in the world, and we want people to talk about it, including in our museums."
