Trump wants to clean up the space industry's red tape. Here's who wins. | TechCrunch
Briefly

President Trump announced a deregulation initiative aimed at the commercial space industry, committing to eliminate ten outdated rules for every new one implemented. An Executive Order outlines the streamlining of launch licensing and spaceport development. The order emphasizes the need to alleviate inefficient permitting processes that hinder investment in U.S. space markets. Agencies like the Department of Transportation are instructed to remove redundant regulations, while the Commerce Department will facilitate new licensing processes for innovative space activities. This initiative was met with approval from industry leaders seeking shorter timelines and clearer regulation.
"Inefficient permitting processes discourage investment and innovation, limiting the ability of U.S. companies to lead in global space markets," he stated in an Executive Order signed August 13.
The order directs the Department of Transportation to cut "outdated, redundant, or overly restrictive" rules that govern launch and re-entry licenses.
The executive order came the same day Transportation Secretary and Acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy dismissed every member of the Commercial Space Transportation Advisory Committee (COMSTAC).
For companies that have spent years mired in environmental reviews and licensing delays, the order was a welcome sign that future bids would experience shorter timelines and more regulatory clarity.
