Donald Trump urged NATO members to stop purchasing Russian oil to help end the conflict in Ukraine. He described continued purchases as "shocking" and warned they "greatly weakens your negotiating position and bargaining power over Russia." He proposed secondary tariffs of 50-100 percent on China for purchases of Russian petroleum, to be lifted once the war concludes, and said he is ready to impose "major" sanctions on Russian oil if NATO members follow suit. Turkey is the third-largest buyer of Russian oil, while Hungary and Slovakia continue imports via the southern branch of the Druzhba pipeline under an EU exemption. NATO launched Eastern Sentry to strengthen and protect the alliance's eastern flank, deploying Rafale and F-16 jets, a frigate, and ground-based defense systems and pledging to defend every inch of its territory.
