""I'm sure Congress will go along if we need that. I don't think we even need that,""
""We won WWI, and we won WWII, not with the Department of Defense, but with a War Department - with the Department of War,""
President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order authorizing the Department of Defense to use the secondary titles "Department of War" and "secretary of war" in official correspondence and documentation. The Defense Department was originally established as the Department of War in 1789, renamed the National Military Establishment in 1947, and became the Department of Defense in 1949. The order will empower Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to use those titles, and Hegseth posted "DEPARTMENT OF WAR" on X. A permanent name change would still require congressional approval. Trump and Hegseth cited historical military victories as justification.
