The postponement followed escalating tensions from the US military buildup in the Caribbean, airstrikes against alleged drug boats resulting in extrajudicial killings, and threats against Venezuela. Dominican President Abinader, consulting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, determined cancellation would prevent a public relations disaster, as past summits witnessed Latin American leaders strongly opposing US regional policies. No new date has been announced for the multilateral summit. Instead, President Trump will host a smaller hemispheric gathering called the "Shield of the Americas" at his Miami golf resort on March 7th, featuring Caribbean and Latin American leaders who support his aggressive interventionism and anti-narcoterror initiatives.
