President Donald Trump threatened to withhold federal money from New York City if Zohran Mamdani wins the mayoral race. The threat came after incumbent Mayor Eric Adams announced he is dropping out of the race. Mamdani leads with 45 percent support among likely voters and faces former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in the general election. Trump repeatedly labeled Mamdani a communist and said Mamdani would have unprecedented problems with Washington and would not receive federal funds. Mamdani emphasized his campaign’s focus on cheaper groceries and lower cost of living and said Trump’s reactions reflect fear of those commitments. Some pundits believe Trump may be privately backing Cuomo, who polls at 23 percent.
