The president announced intentions to expand a federal crackdown on crime and city cleanliness to Chicago and then New York. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered that national guard troops patrolling Washington DC under federal control will be armed. Nearly 2,000 national guard members are stationed in the city, with hundreds of additional troops recently arriving from Republican-led states. The Pentagon and the US Army had earlier said troops would not carry weapons, and city officials were informed of the intent. The president assumed command authority over the DC police and deployed forces under federal jurisdictional powers.
