President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he had fired Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. Cook issued a statement saying she planned to challenge the president's decision and asserting that Trump lacked authority to fire her. At a cabinet meeting, CBS News correspondent Nancy Cordes asked whether the administration was weaponizing government by examining mortgage records of officials. Trump responded emphatically, denying weaponization and stating that mortgage records are public and reporters could check them. He criticized the media's performance, saying reporters should do that job and that if they had, problems like Lisa Cook would not have arisen.
No, they're public, he said. I mean, you can find out those records. You can go check out the records yourself; and you should be doing that job, actually. You wouldn't do that because that's not the kind of reporter you are. But you should be doing that job. I shouldn't have to be doing it. If you did your job properly, we wouldn't have problems like Lisa Cook.
You have spoken out very strongly for a long time about what you see as the weaponization of government, Cordes said. Is your administration weaponizing government by digging into the mortgage records of officials you don't like?
