The Trump administration has proposed that the University of California pay over $1 billion to settle federal antisemitism claims against UCLA, in exchange for reinstating over $584 million in frozen funding. The proposal includes payments in installments and a $172 million fund to support affected Jewish students as part of combating illegal discrimination. Although UC has not accepted the proposal, it would represent the largest settlement involving a university and the Trump administration. California Gov. Gavin Newsom advised UC not to concede to pressure during negotiations regarding the grant restoration.
The Trump administration is demanding that the University of California pay more than $1 billion to settle federal charges of antisemitism in exchange for restoring more than half a billion dollars in frozen grant funding to UCLA.
A proposal from the federal government sent to UC on Friday said the university system should pay the billion-dollar fine in installments and contribute $172 million to a fund to pay Jewish students and other individuals affected by alleged violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
If it were accepted, it would be the largest settlement between a university and the Trump administration.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom said UC should not bend 'on their knees' to President Trump as university leaders negotiate with the administration to restore the frozen UCLA grants.
