"Well, Trump had a lengthy phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin before his in-person meeting with Zelenskyy and came away optimistic, and in that optimism, he was trying to make it sound like Russia could eventually be on board with all of this. At one point, Trump said that, quote, "Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed." But then Russia bombarded Kyiv over the weekend."
They met on Sunday at Mar-a-Lago where Zelenskyy presented a 20-point peace proposal and both leaders said they agreed on most of it. Zelenskyy had earlier described the parties as roughly 90% in agreement and reiterated that figure after the meeting. Both leaders expressed optimism and said they would continue negotiations, but no imminent deal was announced. Trump spoke with Vladimir Putin beforehand and suggested Russia might be willing to support elements of the plan. Russian forces continued attacks over the weekend, including bombardment of Kyiv, leaving significant questions and unresolved issues.
