Trump Says He's Changing the Name of the Department of Defense: We're Just Gonna Do It'
Briefly

A proposal was announced to rename the Department of Defense to the Department of War, with an expectation that Congress would approve any necessary legislation. The U.S. Defense Department was created by the National Security Act of 1947 as the successor to the Department of War. During a White House meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, a reminder was made about Korean women forced into sexual slavery by Japan during World War II. A near-term timeline of about a week was given for a possible change, and confidence was expressed that congressional approval would be obtained if required.
We call it the Department of Defense, but between us, I think we're gonna change the name, Trump said. I think we're gonna have some information on that maybe soon, because I think, you know, Department of Defense, we won the World War I, World War II. It was called the Department of War. And to me, that's really what it is. Defense is a part of that. But I have a feeling we're gonna be changing.
We're just gonna do it, Trump interjected. I'm sure Congress will go along if we need that. I don't think we even need that. But if we need that, I'm sure Congress will go along. You know, that was a name when we won World War I. We won World War II. We won everything, and just to me, seems like just a much more appropriate [name].
