President Donald Trump announced an award of the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Rudolph Giuliani. Giuliani suffered a fractured vertebra and other injuries while a passenger in a rented Ford Bronco struck from behind in New Hampshire. The vehicle was driven by his spokesperson and struck by a Honda HR-V driven by a 19-year-old woman. Giuliani was heralded for leadership after Sept. 11, 2001, but has been controversial for defending Trump. He was disbarred in New York and Washington for repeated false statements about the 2020 election and faces criminal charges in Georgia and Arizona. Former Georgia election workers won a $148 million defamation judgment against him for false ballot fraud claims.
WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump said Monday he's awarding Rudolph Giuliani the Presidential Medal of Freedom, announcing the honor the day after his political ally and former New York mayor was badly injured in a traffic accident. Trump in a statement on social media called Giuliani, who was heralded for his leadership following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks but has sometimes drawn controversy for his defense of Trump, the "greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot."
Giuliani was disbarred as an attorney in New York and Washington after he was found to have repeatedly made false statements about Trump's 2020 election loss. He was criminally charged in Georgia and Arizona over his role in the effort to overturn the 2020 election but denied the allegations. Former Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Wandrea "Shaye" Moss won a $148 million defamation judgment against Giuliani for his false ballot fraud claims against them related to the 2020 election.
