The standing of the military as an independent institution, free from party politics, is at risk. Maj Gen Paul Eaton is a former infantry chief with 37 years of service who trained troops for the Iraq invasion, rebuilt Iraqi forces after 2003, graduated from West Point, and participated in Brennan Center war games in 2024 anticipating authoritarian moves.
