Trump pulls nomination of embattled DC US Attorney pick Ed Martin: 'Wasn't getting the support'
Briefly

President Trump has withdrawn Ed Martin's nomination to be the top federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C., after Senate Republicans opposed his candidacy due to Martin's previous defenses of Capitol riot participants. Trump described Martin as a "terrific person" but indicated that he wasn't receiving enough support. As Martin's appointment expires on May 20, a new nominee will be appointed by Trump. Martin expressed gratitude for his role and highlighted successes in reducing crime and supporting law enforcement during his tenure.
It was going to always require the Senate, and so I knew I had a window, maybe it was going to be a limited window, but a window nonetheless.
In a phone interview Thursday, Martin expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and noted 'successes' in protecting police and reducing crime in D.C.
Without a confirmed U.S. attorney, D.C. District Court Chief Judge James Boasberg would be able to select a replacement, including potential nominees disliked by top aides.
Trump emphasized that while he wants someone great for the position, the withdrawal came due to a lack of support from Senate Republicans.
