Trump memo calls for escalation of mass federal layoffs
Briefly

The White House has issued a memo directing agencies to collaborate with team leaders from the U.S. DOGE Service, led by Elon Musk, amid an aggressive push by Trump to cut down federal jobs. While certain essential entities like law enforcement are exempt, the memo indicates impending larger layoffs following a trend that initially affected smaller probationary personnel. The CFPB has faced cuts, stalling operations under new leadership, and HUD could see a workforce reduction of about 50% impacting key civil rights and data collection roles.
The memo is the latest in Trump's effort to dramatically downsize the federal workforce, which he calls inefficient and an impediment to his agenda.
Scott Bessent, the first of the CFPB's acting directors in the past month, ordered employees to stop working in one of his first actions after assuming the role.
A federal judge put a temporary hold on the mass layoffs of CFPB employees until after a hearing set for March 3.
The White House is looking at a series of cuts that would lower HUD's head count by 50%, or roughly 4,800 employees.
